Two products must be accounted for together
Combined heat and power produces electricity and useful heat. When assessing a schedule change, examine the effects on both flows. A higher evening electricity price is not enough to justify a decision if the heat delivery schedule requires operation at a different time or the process needs stable conditions. Some heat may be used by the plant itself rather than sold.
Our own example assumes that a notional batch of gas containing 10 MWh of chemical energy produces 4 MWh of electricity and 4.5 MWh of useful heat. These are not guaranteed technology parameters. The calculation simply shows that assessing revenue from 4 MWh of electricity alone omits the second product and the possible cost of providing heat from another source.
Flexibility comes with technical conditions
Before analysing prices, gather the CHP unit's confirmed operating range, servicing requirements and permitted rates of change. Add the limits of gas and heat storage and the rules for operating the digestion process. Do not control feed to the biological process as though it were an instantaneous response to a market signal. Its response has its own dynamics and requires process expertise.
A scenario that shifts generation should be approved by the appropriate technical personnel. A commercial model can then check whether the available flexibility has value after costs. We are not recommending changes to equipment settings or safety procedures. Separating a confirmed operating range from an optimistic price-based idea is a prerequisite for a sound assessment of the project and its subsequent operation.
Waste can be a resource, but it needs to be assessed
The IEA highlights the role of biogas and biomethane in the local use of organic streams, waste management and energy security. Potential does not follow from the material's mass alone. Composition, availability, contaminants, the right to use the material and suitability for a particular process all matter. Test results should precede any extrapolation of planned generation.
Information about feedstocks and their testing is also available on Substraty.pl, listed in the sources as an industry resource for further reading. Do not treat example catalogue specifications as a delivery guarantee or as the output of your own installation. When speaking with a supplier, establish whether the sample is representative, how quality will be accounted for and who is responsible for a material change in composition between deliveries.
How to compare operating options
Prepare a baseline scenario and several technically permissible scheduling options. For each, show electricity, useful heat, the plant's own energy needs, operating costs and the impact on contracts. Calculate downtime costs and backup heat supply separately. The wholesale price is only one input to this comparison, not the final answer.
The positive role of a biogas plant comes from combining the use of suitable materials with useful energy products. Value increases when a project meets real local needs and can work safely with the energy system. Also examine methane emissions control and efficient use of heat; revenue from electricity sales alone does not describe the quality of the overall solution.
